Compared with older secretagogues such as hexarelin or GHRP-6, ipamorelin shows weaker stimulation of cortisol, prolactin, and appetite in the animal models used for early characterization. Whether that selectivity is preserved across longer human exposures remains an open question, because published clinical data are limited in size and duration. Reported effects on food intake are generally described as modest. The compound is therefore treated in the literature as a relatively selective research tool rather than a fully characterized therapeutic agent.
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that belongs to the growth hormone secretagogue class of compounds. Researchers at a pharmaceutical company first described it in the 1990s while screening small peptides for growth hormone releasing activity. Its chain contains five amino acid residues, two of which are non-natural building blocks, including 2-aminoisobutyric acid and a naphthylalanine derivative. The molecule was designed to act at the ghrelin receptor while avoiding several effects observed with earlier secretagogues.

Analytical confirmation relies on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often coupled to mass spectrometry for identity and purity assessment. Mass spectrometry distinguishes the intact molecule from truncation products and from oxidation or deamidation variants that share similar chromatographic retention. Immunoassays appear in some biological studies but can cross-react with related peptides, so they are weaker tools for identity work. Reported purity figures depend heavily on the gradient, detector, and integration method used, which complicates direct comparison between laboratories.
Research quantities of ipamorelin are typically distributed as a white to off-white lyophilized powder. The solid dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffers, and stock solutions are commonly prepared in sterile water or a mildly acidic diluent. Adsorption to plastic and glass surfaces can reduce the concentration of very dilute solutions, so containers and transfer steps deserve attention when accurate concentrations matter. Reconstituted material is generally used promptly rather than held for extended periods.
Storage recommendations for the dry solid center on low temperature and low moisture, most often -20 °C in a sealed, desiccated container protected from light. Solutions are less stable than the powder and are usually kept cold and used within a short window. Freeze-thaw cycling is a recognized source of loss, and aliquoting before freezing is a standard precaution. These practices derive from general peptide handling principles rather than from a single published stability trial, so exact shelf lives should be treated as approximate.
Compared with other secretagogues such as GHRP-2, GHRP-6, and hexarelin, ipamorelin is described as more selective. Published animal work reports little or no increase in adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, or prolactin at doses that release growth hormone. This selectivity is the property most often cited in the research literature. Whether the same profile holds across species and dosing schedules remains an open question, since human data are limited and come largely from small studies.
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that belongs to the growth hormone secretagogue family. Its sequence is Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2, and its molecular mass is approximately 711.9 daltons. The compound was described in the late 1990s by researchers seeking molecules that release growth hormone with fewer side effects than earlier secretagogues. It is a laboratory and research compound, not an approved medicine in most jurisdictions.
At the molecular level, ipamorelin acts as an agonist at the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, also called the ghrelin receptor or GHS-R1a. Binding to this receptor on pituitary somatotroph cells triggers a signaling cascade that leads to growth hormone release. The effect is mediated through phospholipase C and calcium mobilization rather than through the cyclic AMP pathway used by growth hormone releasing hormone. The two pathways are complementary, and combined stimulation produces a larger response than either alone.
=== Anti-gravity and forcefields === The Culture (and other societies) have developed powerful anti-gravity abilities, closely related to their ability to manipulate forces themselves. In this ability they can create action-at-a-distance – including forces capable of pushing, pulling, cutting, and even fine manipulation, and forcefields for protection, visual display or plain destructive ability. Such applications still retain restrictions on range and power: while forcefields of many cubic kilometres are possible (and in fact, orbitals are held together by forcefields), even in the chronologically later novels, such as Look to Windward, spaceships are still used for long-distance travel and drones for many remote activities. With the control of a Mind, fields can be manipulated over vast distances. In Use of Weapons, a Culture warship uses its electromagnetic effectors to hack into a computer light years away.
Biomedical waste or hospital waste is any kind of waste containing infectious (or potentially infectious) materials generated during the treatment of humans or animals as well as during research involving biologics. It may also include waste associated with the generation of biomedical waste that visually appears to be of medical or laboratory origin (e.g. packaging, unused bandages, infusion kits etc.), as well research laboratory waste containing biomolecules or organisms that are mainly restricted from environmental release. As detailed below, discarded sharps are considered biomedical waste whether they are contaminated or not, due to the possibility of being contaminated with blood and their propensity to cause injury when not properly contained and disposed. Biomedical waste is a type of biowaste. Biomedical waste may be solid or liquid. Examples of infectious waste include discarded blood, sharps, unwanted microbiological cultures and stocks, identifiable body parts (including those as a result of amputation), other human or animal tissue, used bandages and dressings, discarded gloves, other medical supplies that may have been in contact with blood and body fluids, and laboratory waste that exhibits the characteristics described above. Waste sharps include potentially contaminated used (and unused discarded) needles, scalpels, lancets and other devices capable of penetrating skin. Biomedical waste is generated from biological and medical sources and activities, such as the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of diseases.
=== Molecular electronics applications === Molecular 'switch' peptides can be made into nanoswitches when an electronic component is incorporated. Metal nanocrystals can be covalently linked to the peptides to make them electronically responsive; research is currently being conducted on how to develop electronically controlled molecules and molecular 'machines' using such molecular 'switches'. Peptide nanofibers can also be used as growth templates for a range of inorganic materials, such as silver, gold, platinum, cobalt, nickel, and various semiconducting materials. Electrons transferring aromatic moieties can also be attached to the side chains of peptides to form conducting nanostructures that can transfer electrons in a certain direction. Metal and semiconductor binding peptides have been used for the fabrication of nanowires. Peptides self-assemble into hollow nanotubes to act as casting molds; metal ions that migrate inside the tube undergo reduction to metallic form. The peptide 'mold' can then be enzymatically destroyed to produce a metal nanowire of about 20 nm diameter. This has been done making gold nanowires and this application is especially significant because nanowires at this scale cannot be made by lithography. Researchers have also successfully developed multi-layer nanocables with a silver core nanowire, a peptide insulation layer, and a gold outer coat. This is done by reducing AgNO3 inside nanotubes, and then bounding a layer of thiol-containing peptides with gold particles attached.
The canonical example of a ligand-binding protein is haemoglobin, which transports oxygen from the lungs to other organs and tissues in all vertebrates and has close homologs in every biological kingdom. Lectins are sugar-binding proteins which are highly specific for their sugar moieties. Lectins typically play a role in biological recognition phenomena involving cells and proteins. Receptors are highly specific binding proteins, and many hormones act by binding specifically to their receptors. Transmembrane proteins can serve as ligand transport proteins that alter the permeability of the cell membrane to small molecules and ions. The membrane alone has a hydrophobic core through which polar or charged molecules cannot diffuse. Membrane proteins contain internal channels that allow such molecules to enter and exit the cell. Many ion channel proteins are specialized to select for only a particular ion; for example, potassium and sodium channels often discriminate for only one of the two ions.
=== Numbers and habitats of major phyla === The following table lists estimated numbers of described extant species for the major animal phyla, along with their principal habitats (terrestrial, fresh water, and marine), and free-living or parasitic ways of life. Species estimates shown here are based on numbers described scientifically; much larger estimates have been calculated based on various means of prediction, and these can vary wildly. For instance, around 25,000–27,000 species of nematodes have been described, while published estimates of the total number of nematode species include 10,000–20,000; 500,000; 10 million; and 100 million. Using patterns within the taxonomic hierarchy, the total number of animal species—including those not yet described—was calculated to be about 7.77 million in 2011.

Classical EDS is characterized by extremely elastic skin that is fragile and bruises easily, and hypermobility of the joints. Molluscoid pseudotumors (calcified hematomas that occur over pressure points) and spheroids (cysts that contain fat occurring over forearms and shins) are also often seen. A side complication of the hyperelasticity presented in many EDS cases makes wound closure on its own more difficult. Sometimes, motor development is delayed and hypotonia occurs. The variation causing this type of EDS is in the genes COL5A2, COL5A1, and less frequently COL1A1. It involves the skin more than hEDS. In classical EDS, large variation in symptom presentation is seen. Because of this variance, EDS has often been underdiagnosed. Without genetic testing, healthcare professionals may be able to provide a provisional diagnosis based on careful examination of the mouth, skin, and bones, as well as by neurological assessment. A good way to begin the diagnostic process is by reviewing a person's family history. EDS is an autosomal dominant condition, so it is often inherited from parents. Genetic testing remains the most reliable way to diagnose EDS. No cure for type 1 EDS has been found, but a course of non-weight-bearing exercise can help with muscular tension, which can help correct some EDS symptoms. Anti-inflammatory drugs and lifestyle changes can help with joint pain. Lifestyle choices should also be made with children who have EDS to try to prevent wounds to the skin. Protective garments can help with this.
== Function == Collagen VI plays many different roles in the cell depending on which tissue in which it is expressed. ColVI maintains a mechanical function in the cell, which is typical of most types of Collagen, by providing stability and structural support in the ECM. ColVI allows muscle cells to connect with the ECM by interacting with perlecan in the basal lamina. ColVI also functions as a cytoprotective agent:
=== Verapamil-containing silicone gel === Verapamil, a type of calcium channel blocker, is considered a candidate drug for the treatment of hypertrophic scars. A study conducted by the Catholic University of Korea concluded that verapamil-releasing silicone gel is effective and is a superior alternative to the conventional silicone gel where decreased median SEI, fibroblast count, and collagen density in all verapamil-added treatment groups were observed. Gross morphologic features suggested that the combination of verapamil and silicone improves the overall quality of hypertrophic scars by reducing scar height and redness. This was verified with quantifiable histomorphometric parameters; however, oral verapamil is not a good choice because of its effect of lowering blood pressure. Intralesional injection of verapamil is also suboptimal because of the required frequency for injections. Topical silicone gel combined with verapamil does not lead to systemic hypotension, is convenient to apply, and shows enhanced results.
== Research == Lemborexant is under development for the treatment of circadian rhythm sleep disorders, sleep apnea, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. As of February 2022, it is in phase 2 clinical trials for circadian rhythm sleep disorders and phase 1 trials for sleep apnea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
"have a sensitivity of at least 80% for detecting a particular psychiatric disorder" "should have a specificity of at least 80% for distinguishing this disorder from other psychiatric or medical disorders" "should be reliable, reproducible, and ideally be noninvasive, simple to perform, and inexpensive" "proposed biomarkers should be verified by 2 independent studies each by a different investigator and different population samples and published in a peer-reviewed journal" The review concluded that although neuroimaging diagnosis may technically be feasible, very large studies are needed to evaluate specific biomarkers which were not available.

== Epidemiology == The incidence and prevalence of PMD are unknown, and no studies have yet investigated its prevalence or incidence. However, it is generally agreed that PMD is a very rare condition. Some uncertainty regarding the incidence of PMD may be attributed to its confusion with keratoconus. PMD is not linked to race or age, although most cases present early in life, between 20 and 40 years of age. While PMD is usually considered to affect men and women equally, some studies suggest that it may affect men more frequently. Several diseases have been observed in people with PMD. However, no causal relationships have been established between any of the associated diseases and the pathogenesis of PMD. Such diseases include: chronic open angle glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, retinal lattice degeneration, scleroderma, kerato-conjunctivitis, eczema, and hyperthyroidism.
=== Presentation === The clinical manifestations of this disease are anaemia, jaundice, fever, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, haematochezia and persistent bleeding from the nose, oral cavity and the tips, margins and outer surface of the pinnae. Other features include lethargy, loss of appetite, weakness, weight loss, dyspnoea, petechiae and haematemesis.
== Measuring and processing the interferogram == The interferogram has to be measured from zero path difference to a maximum length that depends on the resolution required. In practice the scan can be on either side of zero resulting in a double-sided interferogram. Mechanical design limitations may mean that for the highest resolution the scan runs to the maximum OPD on one side of zero only. The interferogram is converted to a spectrum by Fourier transformation. This requires it to be stored in digital form as a series of values at equal intervals of the path difference between the two beams. To measure the path difference a laser beam is sent through the interferometer, generating a sinusoidal signal where the separation between successive maxima is equal to the wavelength of the laser (typically a 633 nm HeNe laser is used). This can trigger an analog-to-digital converter to measure the IR signal each time the laser signal passes through zero. Alternatively, the laser and IR signals can be measured synchronously at smaller intervals with the IR signal at points corresponding to the laser signal zero crossing being determined by interpolation. This approach allows the use of analog-to-digital converters that are more accurate and precise than converters that can be triggered, resulting in lower noise.
Most RTGs use 238Pu, which decays with a half-life of 87.7 years. RTGs using this material therefore diminish in power output by a factor of 1 – (1/2)1/87.7, or 0.787%, per year. One example is the MHW-RTG used by the Voyager probes. In the year 2000, 23 years after production, the radioactive material inside the RTG had decreased in power by 16.6%, i.e. providing 83.4% of its initial output; starting with a capacity of 470 W, after this length of time it would have a capacity of only 392 W. A related loss of power in the Voyager RTGs is the degrading properties of the bi-metallic thermocouples used to convert thermal energy into electrical energy; the RTGs were working at about 67% of their total original capacity instead of the expected 83.4%. By the beginning of 2001, the power generated by the Voyager RTGs had dropped to 315 W for Voyager 1 and to 319 W for Voyager 2. By 2022, these numbers had dropped to around 220 W. NASA has developed a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator (MMRTG) in which the thermocouples would be made of skutterudite, a cobalt arsenide (CoAs3), which can function with a smaller temperature difference than the current tellurium-based designs. This would mean that an otherwise similar RTG would generate 25% more power at the beginning of a mission and at least 50% more after seventeen years. NASA hopes to use the design on the next New Frontiers mission.
Spironolactone has been found to decrease the bioavailability of high doses of oral estradiol. Although widely employed, the use of spironolactone as an antiandrogen in transgender women has recently been questioned due to the various shortcomings of the medication for such purposes. Cyproterone acetate is an antiandrogen and progestin which is used in the treatment of numerous androgen-dependent conditions and is also used as a progestogen in birth control pills. It works primarily as an antigonadotropin, secondarily to its potent progestogenic activity, and strongly suppresses gonadal androgen production. Cyproterone acetate at a dosage of 5 to 10 mg/day has been found to lower testosterone levels in men by about 50 to 70%, while a dosage of 100 mg/day has been found to lower testosterone levels in men by about 75%. The combination of 25 mg/day cyproterone acetate and a moderate dosage of estradiol has been found to suppress testosterone levels in transgender women by about 95%. In combination with estrogen, 10, 25, and 50 mg/day cyproterone acetate have all shown the same degree of testosterone suppression. In addition to its actions as an antigonadotropin, cyproterone acetate is an androgen receptor antagonist. However, this action is relatively insignificant at low dosages, and is more important at the high doses of cyproterone acetate that are used in the treatment of prostate cancer (100–300 mg/day). Cyproterone acetate can cause elevated liver enzymes and liver damage, including liver failure.
